2017 will be another great year for sport. Apart from the regular football, basketball and Formula One seasons, there a number of other exciting sporting events exclusive to 2017.
From the Winter Universiade to the Ashes Cricket Series, here’s a small list of major sporting events in the 2017 calendar year.
#10 – Tennis Grand Slams – (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open)
While the four grand slams are contested every year, this time it is all the more special for one reason: Roger Federer.
While every match Federer plays from here on will be a gift to fans, he still very much wants to win Grand Slam #18 and as such, all eyes of the tennis world will be on Federer at the Slams of 2017.
#9 – Winter games – 2017 Winter Universiade, Kazakhstan (January 28 – February 8)
Winter Universiade 2017, the XXVIII Winter Universiade, is a multi-sport winter event which will take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Student-athletes from all over the world between the ages of 17 and 28 will flock to Almaty to take part in Winter Universiade organized by FISU.
Altogether, 64 National University Sports Federations are expected to send athletes and you might just spot the next big thing in sports.
#8 – The 2017 Pro Bowl
It’s the NFL’s all-star game for the 2016 season which will be played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida on January 29, 2017. The rosters will be announced on December 20 on a Pro Bowl selection show on NFL Network.
#7 – Super Bowl LI (February 5, 2017 at NRG Stadium in Houston)
Super Bowl LI will be the 51st Super Bowl and the 47th modern-era NFL championship game. The AFC champion will play the NFC champion to decide the league champion for the 2016 season. Tensions will be very high.
#6 – Asian Winter Games 2017
The 8th edition of the Asian Winter Games will be hosted in Sapporo and Obihiro, Japan. Originally scheduled for 2018, the Olympic Council of Asia’s general assembly decided to move the Games to one year before the Winter Olympics moving forward.
#5 – 2017 NBA All-Star Game
The exhibition basketball game that will be played on February 19, 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Smoothie King Center. It will be the 66th edition of the event and will be one of the most watches sporting events globally.
#4 – World Table Tennis Championship, Dusseldorf (Germany)
The 2017 World Table Tennis Championships is due to be held in Düsseldorf, Germany, from 29 May to 5 June 2017. It will be the 54th edition of the biennial competition.
#3 – 2017 Summer Deaflympics
Officially known as the 23rd Summer Deaflympics, is an international multi-sport event that will take place in Samsun, Turkey from July 18 to July 30, 2017. If you need inspiration, just watch these people overcome the odds and make magic happen.
#2 – 2017 ITU World Triathlon Series
It’s the International Triathlon Union’s annual series of triathlon events used to crown an annual world champion. There are eight rounds of competitions culminating in a Grand Final race. Athletes compete head-to-head for points in these races that will determine the overall ITU world champion.
#1 – 2017–18 Ashes Cricket Series
An Ashes series is traditionally of five Tests, hosted in turn by England and Australia at least once every four years. To decide who takes home the Ashes of Australian Cricket, the series will be played at five venues across Australia between 23 November 2017 and 8 January 2018.
