At the end of every year we rewind and cherish the best moments of the year so far. 2016 has be an absolute delight for the sports lovers of the country with highlights such as P.V Sindhu bagging the silver medal at the Olympics, winning the China Open Super Series Premier and finishing as the runner-up in Hong Kong Open Super Series, the Kabaddi Team maintaining their unbeaten run at the World-Cups, the Indian Cricket Team retaining their No.1 Spot in the Test Rankings .etc.

Oh Boy! We have come so far. The year is about to end and we definitely need a run-through. So here’s listing out the most unforgettable Sporty bits from our National Super-Heroes.

1) Indian girls making the nation proud at the Olympics

Girl Power! Girl Power, everywhere! 2016 has been the year of Women. When the whole nation was doomed at the thought of not winning home a medal at the Rio Olympics, two women from our huge Indian Contingent threw us all by surprise. P.V Sindhu and Sakshi Malik have inspired many budding youngsters in the country to take up sports. Not to forget the valiant efforts of the lone Indian Female Gymnast Dipa Karmakar, finishing a superb 4th and the young teenager Aditi Ashok qualifying for the Golf Finals.

2) Bengaluru FC reaching the finals of the AFC Cup

When Football was just going down and down crashing in the country, the I-League heroes Bengaluru FC brought back the football fever to India. The whole of Sree Kanteerava Stadium was rooting for the Boys in Blue and they never did disappoint the ardent BFC fans. They went on to beat the defending champions in the semis to become the first team from India to enter the AFC Cup finals. Although, the result was disappointing, BFC instilled hopes of a budding football future in the country.

3) Sania Mirza finishing as the World no.1

She won the Brisbane title with Martina Hingis and then wrapped the Australian open trophy with her arms. Her partnership with Hingis was on a song. But then nobody expected that it would all go down some day. But Sania was not done. She went on to win the Cincinnati Masters title and retain the World no.1 ranking at the end of 2016.

4) Paralympians of India putting up their best show ever

It was a rare sight as the Indian Paralympians went on to better the performance of the Indian Olympians. With only 19 participants in the fray, they finished with 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 Bronze. Mariyappan Thangavelu, Devendra Jhajharia, Deepa Malik and Varun Singh Bhati are definitely India’s pride.

5) India winning the Kabaddi World Cup for the 3rd consecutive time

There’s no stopping the Indian Team when it comes to Kabaddi. Although they were beaten by South Korea in the group stages, they didn’t let it get to them. Trailing in the first half, India came back stronger in the second to lift the Kabaddi World Cup title for the 3rd consecutive time.

6) The Women’s Cricket Team winning their maiden T20 title against Australia

History was made in Melbourne when the Women’s Cricket Team beat Australia to win the T20 series and establish a 2-0 lead. It was their maiden T20 series win against Australia.

7) The Junior Hockey World Cup Victory

Just when we thought the year was coming to an end and we were counting on the best moments of 2016, the Indian Hockey lads stunned the entire nation winning the Junior Hockey World Cup by beating Belgium 2-1 in the finals. What a way to end the year!

It has been a good year for India in terms of sports. Although there were a bit of disappointments at the Rio Olympics, the Indians continued to do well around the world in all forms of sports, thus making our nation proud. Hopefully, there’ll be a lot of action and trophies coming back home in 2017. Here’s wishing everyone a Happy New year 2017!
