The Golden Girl of Indian Tennis, Sania Mirza turn 30 today. She has been an absolute pride to the nation, raking in numerous laurels with every passing day. Although her Singles journey started off quite big and didn’t turn out too well, she never disappointed her fans and made it big in the doubles. Her epic partnership with Martina Hingis will never be forgotten where the pair ended up winning 14 titles in just 16 months. In spite of the Santina Heartbreak, Sania kept her winning run going and raked in 3 other titles this season with other partners.

#1. Winning the year-end World no.1 Trophy for Women’s Doubles at the end of 2016 Season

Despite her Split with Martina Hingis, Sania Mirza went on to win 3 other titles for the rest of the season. Thus retaining the World no.1 ranking for the rest of 2016.


Time Magazine’s “100 most influential people in the world” in 2016

Along with the Ex-RBI chief Raghuram Rajan, Actress Priyanka Chopra, Flipkart Founders Sachin and Binny Bansal, Tennis Star Sania Mirza was also declared as the 100 Most Influential people by the Time Magazine in 2016.

Australian Open 2016 Women’s Doubles Title with Martina Hingis

After clinching the Wimbledon and the US open titles in 2015, Sania and Martina went on to win their 3rd consecutive Grand Slam title at the Australian open 2016. They beat the Czech’s Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká 7-6 6-3 in the finals.

Padma Bushan award

Sania Mirza was bestowed with the third highest civilian award of the country, Padma Bhushan in 2016 along with the Badminton star, Saina Nehwal both being representatives of Telangana state.

Last title with Hingis at Rome

Santina won their last title before they shocked the world with their split at the Italian Open, Rome by beating the Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 6–1, 6–7, [10–3].

Beating Hingis to Win Cincinnati Masters

Playing against someone who you partnered with, that too in a masters 1000 finals should be really challenging. Sania Mirza went on to beat Martina Hingis in the finals of the Cincinnati Masters by partnering with Barbora Strýcová. The match came to a halt in 2 sets when the Indo-Czech pair won 7-5 6-4.

8 Women’s Doubles Titles

5 titles partnering Martina Hingis, 2 titles partnering Barbora Strýcová and 1 title with Monica Niculescu which include 1 Grand Slam and 2 1000 Masters, it was a challenging season for the Indian Tennis star.


Sania Mirza has always lifted Indian Tennis up and high through her performances in the International circuit. She stands as an inspiration to many aspiring young kids who want to take up Tennis and succeed someday. Let’s hope we get to see not one but many such talents in the future.
