However, isn’t as easy as it appears. It is a form of modern combat art, in which two fencers face each other. There are three types of swords used in Fencing. They are: epée, foil, and sabre.
They aim of the game is to hit your opponent without being hit.

To score fencing has been quite a challenge with the naked eye. Hence, an electric apparatus was introduced. The way it works is when the tip of the sword makes contact with the targetted area it triggers a light. Either a red or a green light is triggered, depending on where the athlete’s sword lands.
The first fencer to reach 15 points wins. This takes place in 3 minute periods broken up by 1 minute intervals. Each touch is worth 1 point.
A bout can last a maximum of 9 minutes.
In Fencing, there are three types of swords used. They are épée, foil and sabre.
Epée- This is a thrusting weapon, just like the foil. However, it is much heavier. It can weigh upto 770 gms. In épée, the entire body can be a valid target. If both the fencers hit, they both are granted a point.
Foil- The foil is a light thrusting weapon. The most it can weigh is about 550 gms. The back, torso, hip, neck and groin are valid targets. The arms and legs are not. Hits with the side of the blade do not count. Just the tip of the sword.
Sabre- The sabre is a light cutting and thrusting sword. The maximum weight for this is about 500gms. The entire body above the waist is considered a target, except the fighting hand. Touches made by either the point or edge of the sword is counted as a valid point.
Fencing outfits are white as earlier the electronic system of points didn’t exist. Earlier, to determine whether a fencer made a point or not, an inked soaked cotton tip was placed on the weapons.
Masks and neck bibs are subject to stringent checks. The masks need to pass the 12kg punch test, only then can be used in competition. Neck bibs are made from strong materials like Kevlar.
Footwear in fencing can be similar to that of racket sports or handball. The sole of the footwear should be thin, making it easier for the players to maneuver.
As a Fencer, there are few basic skills you must have in order to succeed.
Good footwork is a must. Being able to move quickly in response to your opponent’s attack is very important. Quick reactions is a result of quick footwork.
Efficient blade work is also a must-have skill for all Fencers. This isn’t an easy skill to master, but it is one without which a fencer would have a tough time. Being able to aim correctly at the target area requires a fencer to be strong and coordinated.
Being agile and grounded is so essential. A fencer must have the ability to get out of tricky situations by thinking quick, not only mentally but physically.
There is a certain amount of physical strength that is required. Stay balanced and maintaining a good balance is necessary.
