What You Need To Know About: Sports And PCOS

What is PCOD/PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS/PCOD) is a hormonal disorder that a number of women all over the world face once they’ve reached the reproductive age. This occurs when a woman has a hormonal imbalance and has a number of cysts accumulating in her ovaries.

Excessive amounts of testosterone (“male” hormone) are produced by the ovaries. This condition may lead to infertility, menstrual irregularity and excessive hair growth.

There are a number of symptoms which can help you identify this condition:

  • Acne
  • Excessive facial hair growth
  • Depression
  • Infertility
  • Thinning hair
  • Weight gain
  • Irregular menstrual cycles.

PCOS may lead to long term health problems like diabetes and heart conditions. Sleep apnea is common in women who are overweight, it results in pauses in breathing during the night which may lead to irregular sleep. The irregular menstrual cycles may give rise to endometrial cancer. Such hormonal changes may also bring about depression.

Quite a bit of importance is given to weight loss. This is because the body becomes insulin resistant- a condition where the body cannot respond properly to insulin.

An increased amount of glucose in the blood sugar causes an increase in the amount of insulin produced. This insulin moves excess sugar to cells which are later to convert to fat.

Playing a sport has always come in handy especially when dealing with various health conditions.

Sport goes a long way with improving the symptoms of PCOS as it:

#1. Regulates Hormones

Excessive fat in the body may lead to the production of hormones such as estrogen. Sports help your body burn calories which will help you lose weight and reduce insulin. Reducing extra fat sores can help in regulating hormones.

#2. Weight Loss

Women with PCOS struggle with weight loss despite a healthy diet and exercise. This should not be a reason to discontinue playing a sport though it is often seen as a reason to.

#3. Better Sleep

Women with PCOS are more likely to have problems with sleep such as insomnia and sleep apnea. Sports has always helped with improving sleep. Not only does it help with better quality sleep but it also helps fall asleep quicker. Though the results may not be immediate exercise has long term benefits.

#4. Boosts Insulin Sensitivity

Regular exercises help the body to respond to insulin better, lowers risk for diabetes and other complications.

#5. Production of Endorphins

Women with PCOS are more likely to develop symptoms of depression. Playing a sport regularly can help with depression as it leads to the release of hormones such as endorphins. Endorphins are hormones which help manage stress and promotes a feeling of wellness.

Exercise alone will not help with PCOS. However, it may act as a tool to help you manage it. The frequency of activity and a healthy diet play a very important role in helping with weight loss.
