India is one of the world’s biggest sporting nations. We follow matches, support our favourite teams, celebrate sporting achievements and spend hours talking about the games we love. Yet, while our love for sport continues to grow, many of us have gradually stopped playing it ourselves.
As children, playing was simply part of everyday life. We played after school, met friends on the playground and spent hours on the court or field without needing to plan around work or other responsibilities. Growing up changes that routine. Work, long commutes, increasing screen time and everyday commitments slowly take up more of our time, and sport often gets pushed to the sidelines.
At Playo, we believe it is time to change that. As India celebrates another year of independence, we have launched ‘Khelo India. Playo India.’, a nationwide digital campaign built around a simple message: Get Free. Get Playing.
The campaign is about encouraging Indians, particularly working professionals, to reconnect with sport and rediscover the freedom that comes with simply playing. It is not about becoming an athlete or making a major lifestyle change. It is about finding time for something many of us enjoyed naturally before growing up made our schedules more complicated.
Why We Created ‘Khelo India. Playo India.’
The idea behind the campaign comes from a simple observation. India has no shortage of sports fans, but there is an opportunity to create more sports players.
For many working professionals, the distance from sport happens gradually. A busy workday becomes a reason to skip a game. A long commute makes it easier to head home. Weekends fill up with errands and responsibilities. Eventually, playing sport becomes something we remember doing rather than something we continue to do.
‘Khelo India. Playo India.’ brings these experiences to the forefront through stories from professionals across technology, healthcare, education, finance, law, entrepreneurship and other fields. They share why they stopped playing, what kept them away and what made them return to sport.
Through these stories, the campaign explores an idea that goes beyond fitness. Playing sport can be about spending time with friends, meeting new people, building a community, taking a break from screens or simply creating some time for ourselves. Sometimes, getting back to sport can be as simple as picking up a racket, joining a football game or making plans for a weekend match.
Turning Fans Back Into Players
The campaign features a hero film and a series of stories from professionals across technology, healthcare, education, finance, law, entrepreneurship and other fields. Through these stories, it looks at why people who once played regularly often stop as they move into working life, what keeps them away from sport and what brings them back.
The campaign is built around the message, “Let’s Turn A Billion Fans Into A Billion Players.” Speaking about the campaign, Gauravjeet Singh, Founder & CEO, Playo, said:
“India doesn’t have a shortage of sports fans. It has an opportunity to create more players. As children, most of us played every day. Somewhere between growing up and building careers, we stopped. Through ‘Khelo India. Playo India.’, we want to remind people that playing isn’t just about fitness. It’s about friendships, community, happiness and creating time for ourselves again. If we can inspire even a fraction of India’s sports fans to step back onto the court or field, it can transform how the country experiences sport.”
This isn’t a campaign asking India to fall in love with sport. It is asking India to fall back in love with playing it. That shift is already visible across the Playo community, with more than 5 million users across 150+ cities and five countries turning to the platform every month and collectively playing nearly 2 million sessions. Each session represents people making time for sport amid their everyday routines, whether it is a game with friends, a weekend match or a regular playing group.
As conversations around physical wellbeing, mental health and digital fatigue continue to gain prominence, recreational sport is also being recognised for its role beyond physical fitness. It can provide a way to step away from screens and routines, spend time with others and reconnect with an activity that may have been missing from everyday life.

Making Space for Sport Again
Conversations around physical wellbeing, mental health and digital fatigue have made it increasingly important to find meaningful ways to step away from everyday routines. Recreational sport can offer that space while also bringing people together.
A game does not have to be competitive to be valuable. It can be a way to get moving after a long day, catch up with friends, meet people in the community or simply spend an hour away from a screen. Whether it is badminton, football, cricket, pickleball or another sport, making time to play can bring something different to an otherwise busy routine.
That is what we hope ‘Khelo India. Playo India.’ encourages more Indians to do: make room for sport again.
India already has a billion reasons to love sport. Now, we want to help turn that passion from something people watch and follow into something they actively experience.
Let’s turn a billion fans into a billion players.
