Most people play sports to stay fit and squeeze a bit of physical activity into their day. And for those of you who hate going to the gym, playing a sport like football or basketball can be an effective and fun way of getting a full body workout.
But sports isn’t always about intense physical activity and sweat. Some games are played merely for pleasure or recreational purposes. Table tennis is one such sport. In fact, TT is probably one of the most laid back sports out there. Here’s why.
Indoor Sport
The best part about table tennis is that you can set up a ping pong net anywhere you’d like (as long as you’ve got a table) and start a match. This makes it the ideal indoor sport for those of you looking to get a bit of activity without leaving the house. And the best part is that the rules can be bent slightly based on the players’ preferences. This makes table tennis a sport that can be played by the entire family.
Played During Office Breaks
Nearly every startup and most large companies have at least one Ping Pong table (check reviews here) in their office building. It’s an effective way to relax and unwind after a long, stressful day. It also serves as the perfect 10-minute break for when you’re working on an intense project. This is easily the most utilitarian aspect of the sport – that you can finish a game in just 10 minutes based on the number of points you’re playing for.
Football, cricket and all those other sports out there may be lots of fun. But it takes a lot longer to play a whole game, and you’ll get all sweaty by the end of it; not the ideal sport for office hours.
All Ages
Another reason why TT is considered a leisure game is primarily due to the fact that it can be played by people across various age groups. Whether you’re 7 or 70, you can learn TT quickly, and the rules are simple enough to understand. The basic shots can be learnt within a week, and within two weeks, you’ll be able to rally the ball a couple of times. This makes it a sport that’s enjoyed by people of all ages across the world. Add to this the fact that it’s an indoor sport, and you’ve got one of the most popular games in the world!
Take It Seriously
TT may be a leisurely activity to pursue, but make sure that you play it as seriously as you would any other sport. Only by following the rules and paying attention to the sport will you be able to improve your skill, and with it, increase the pleasure you derive from the sport.
This is just one of the few leisure sports out there. Do you know any more? Let us know in the comments!
