The Global Chess League 2026 has a new champion, with the Ganges Grandmasters winning their maiden title after defeating defending champions Alpine APL Pipers in the Season 4 final in Bengaluru on September 13. The Grandmasters won the two-match championship final 7-5 on aggregate, following a 3-3 draw in the opening match and a 4-2 victory in the second.
The fourth season of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League was held in Bengaluru from September 5 to 13, 2026. Six teams competed in the league stage, with each team playing 10 matches before the top two advanced to the championship final.
Global Chess League 2026 Winner
Ganges Grandmasters are the Global Chess League 2026 champions. The team entered the final as the league-stage table toppers and then overcame the defending champions Alpine APL Pipers in a closely fought championship battle.
The first final match ended in a 3-3 draw. Ganges Grandmasters then produced a 4-2 win in the second match to claim the title with a 7-5 aggregate score.
The title-winning Ganges Grandmasters squad consisted of Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Leinier Dominguez, Polina Shuvalova, Stavroula Tsolakidou and Leon Mendonca, with B. Adhiban serving as coach. Nepomniachtchi was the team’s Icon, while Aronian and Dominguez occupied the Superstar Men boards, Shuvalova and Tsolakidou were the Superstar Women, and Mendonca was the Prodigy.
Nepomniachtchi delivered one of the defining moments of the final by defeating world number one Magnus Carlsen in the second match. Tsolakidou then defeated Koneru Humpy, securing the decisive match point for the Grandmasters with a game still remaining.

Ganges Grandmasters and Alpine APL Pipers both finished the league stage with 18 match points, but Ganges took first place because of their superior 95 game points compared with Alpine’s 88. Similarly, FYERS American Gambits finished ahead of CheQ Mumba Masters despite both teams having 15 match points, with an 86-85 advantage in game points. Triveni Continental Kings and PBG Alaskan Knights also finished level on 12 match points, with Triveni taking fifth place on game points.
The standings remained extremely close going into the final round-robin day. Both Ganges and Alpine lost their last league matches, while teams lower in the table picked up wins. However, the game-point tiebreaks kept Ganges and Alpine in the top two positions and sent them through to the final.
FYERS American Gambits Finish Third
FYERS American Gambits claimed third place after defeating CheQ Mumba Masters 7.5-4.5 across their two-match playoff. The Gambits won the opening match 3.5-2.5 and followed it with a 4-2 victory in the second match.
The result gave the Gambits the bronze position after they had finished third in the league standings, one game point ahead of Mumba Masters.
Tsolakidou Named Player of the Tournament
Ganges Grandmasters’ title run was capped by Stavroula Tsolakidou being named the Player of the Tournament. The Greek International Master finished with 21.5 points from 12 games, including six wins and three draws.
Polina Shuvalova also had an impressive campaign and recorded the highest individual score on the tournament’s regular 10-game basis, finishing with 7/10.

The Global Chess League 2026 concluded with Ganges Grandmasters lifting their first championship trophy, while Alpine APL Pipers finished runners-up. FYERS American Gambits secured third place, followed by CheQ Mumba Masters, Triveni Continental Kings and PBG Alaskan Knights in the league-stage standings.
The 7-5 aggregate victory over Alpine APL Pipers gave Ganges Grandmasters their maiden Global Chess League title and completed a remarkable Season 4 campaign in Bengaluru.
