3 Things You Shouldn’t Forget While Buying Your Tennis Racket

The tennis racket is the most important piece of equipment you will ever possess as a tennis player. Compared to badminton rackets, tennis rackets are a little more expensive and a lot larger.

Even when you’re just starting out, it’s important to get yourself a racket that suits you best. This will help you practice more effectively, and you can save money on modifications. Here are a few tips to help you select the perfect tennis racket.

1) Calculate Grip Size

To calculate your grip size, hold your playing palm face up and measure the distance between the middle crease on your palm and the tip of your ring finger. This is roughly the measurement you will use to select a racket grip.

Adult grip sizes are usually between 4 ⅛ inches to 4 ⅝ inches. If you find yourself between grip sizes, just get a lower grip size and add an overgrip to the racket handle. This should add 1/16th of an inch to the grip.

2) Power or Control

Head-heavy rackets, or those with a larger head, are usually the more powerful rackets. But as a trade-off, these rackets offer far less control and maneuverability. Smaller rackets, on the other hand, offer much better control and are perfect for the more technical players. However, they tend to generate less power into each shot, so you’ll have to swing a lot harder if you want to wield one of these.

If you’re a beginner, aim for a head size anywhere between 105 – 110 square inches, with a lightweight frame. You also want your entire racket to be roughly 27 inches, as this size offers the perfect mix of power and control.

Another factor that determines power and control is the flexibility of the racket shaft. The more flexible the shaft, the more power it generates and the less control it will have.

3) Stringing the Racket

Another important aspect of selecting the right racket is the kind of string used on it. Nylon strings are the least expensive kind out there, and the most durable. However, nylon does not cushion the ball too well and reduces the power of a swing.

Polyester, on the other hand, is a little more expensive but not as stiff as nylon. On the downside, polyester strings lose tension quickly and need to be replaced soon.

The market also offers string made from natural gut or cow intestine. These are the most expensive kind of strings, so unless you plan to spend a lot of money on tennis, it’s best to avoid this kind of string.

Based on the city you live in, you may be able to find stores selling strings that you can customize for the tension and feel that you’re looking for.

Take Your Time

Choosing a racket can be confusing considering the multitude of options out there. But it’s important to take your time and explore the different types in the market before settling on one.

This way, you’ll be happy with your purchase, and you can find a racket that complements your style of play.
