Is it okay for women to play sports during periods?

There is so much stigma attached to periods, let alone women engaging in sports during this time. There are several euphemisms surrounding this term, such as ‘time of the month’ and ‘she’s going to be PMS-y’.

These can be highly annoying for a woman to hear especially when they’re coupled with men thinking that women aren’t capable of doing anything during this time.

Well, I am here to tell you that not only can women get work done, but they can play sports too during this time.

Ladies, periods are no fun. But staying active could do you more good than you think.

Here’s why sports during periods can be beneficial:

1.Best distraction-

It’s no secret that during periods, things can get painful. Stomach aches, body cramps are part and parcel of a woman’s menstrual cycle. Taking your mind off these painful bits by indulging in sports is a great hack.

Sports is a great distraction from all things negative, leaving you feeling great about yourself.

2. Mood enhancer-

During one’s period, the mood tends to be low. Being on your period is no joy-ride, hence irritation levels are elevated. Sports and exercise is definitely a mood lifter.

Its sure to make you happier about yourself.

3. More strength, less pain-

It is said that on the first few days of a menstrual cycle one may experience greater gains in power and even strength. This is due to the fact that there is a dip in female hormones.

Light sporting activities and exercise can aid a person to combat painful periods.

Keep in mind:

Exercise and sports are definitely beneficial during periods, but there are certain things one should keep in mind.

Going all out and playing with one’s usual intensity isn’t recommended either. It is safer to modify your exercise or sports to a lower intensity which won’t cause you any additional pain.

Exercise during periods shouldn’t be avoided as it does help reduce bloating.

If you feel you are not able to play or perform the way you do otherwise; remember, it is normal. Most, if not all, women’s performances aren’t at their peak during their periods.

Overall playing or playing to normal capacity could lead to more stress and higher levels of fatigue. This in turn would require a lot more rest and sleep for recovery.

Make sure to get in sufficient sleep as sleep facilitates recuperation and the regulation of hormones.

Conclusion

Sports during periods are recommended in a lighter capacity. Avoiding physical activities is definitely not advisable. It is good for your physical and mental health.

Fret no more when you’re on your period. There’s nothing you can’t do!
